Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios on August 29, 2019, and this is the part of it that comes looking for you. Report to the First Order Cargo Bay and Supreme Leader Kylo Ren arrives on Batuu, then works through Black Spire Outpost hunting Resistance threats while Stormtroopers question whoever is standing closest. Disney lists it at 25 minutes, long enough to read as a show rather than a photo op. There is no queue and no seating. People drift in off the street, watch until the shouting stops, and drift back out.

Sequel trilogy fans tend to rate this among the better things they did in the land, mostly for how well the costumes and the performances hold up at arm's length. The complaints are just as consistent. Black Spire Outpost has almost no shade, so a midday set means standing in full sun, and the sightlines belong to whoever arrived first. Small children are the real risk, because Kylo Ren shouts and toddlers cry. Performance times are posted on the day, so this is one thing in the land you can plan around instead of hoping to catch.

The good

  • Kylo Ren picks people out of the crowd
    Stormtroopers question guests standing at the front and the performers work off whatever they get back. Two sets an hour apart do not play the same way.
  • The costumes hold up at arm's length
    You end up close enough to see the armor and the fabric, and visitors consistently say it survives that look. Most character encounters are not built to be inspected.
  • You walk up and watch, no line
    Nobody checks you in and nobody holds a spot. Join the crowd when it forms, leave when you've had enough.
  • The show asks you to pick a side
    Disney frames it as a choice: back the First Order, or mislead it and help the Resistance. Playing along is the difference between watching this and being in it.
  • You hear him coming before you see him
    The sound comes up before the characters appear, and the crowd turns as one. It's the best thirty seconds of the whole thing.

The bad

  • Most people stumble into it by accident
    Visitors describe rounding a corner into a First Order sweep with no idea it was scheduled. The times are published, but few people look them up before they walk into the land.
  • You stand in full sun the whole time
    There's no shade worth the name where the crowd gathers, and the paving throws the heat back at you. A midday set is genuinely rough in August.
  • Whoever got there first owns the sightline
    The crowd packs in a ring with no risers and no marked rows. Shorter guests and kids on foot spend the show looking at backs.
  • Kylo Ren frightens small kids
    He shouts, he looms, and he does it a few feet from the front row. Plenty of parents report the crying starting well before the end.

  • Stand near the First Order Cargo Bay
    That's where Disney tells you to report and where Kylo Ren arrives. Get there a few minutes early if you want the front of the crowd.
  • Give it the full 25 minutes
    It runs long for a street show, so catching the last five minutes gets you almost none of it. Slot it against a meal or a nearby queue rather than squeezing it between two rides.
  • Step out when the sound cue starts
    If you're shopping or eating nearby, the audio is your signal to move. Waiting until you can see anything usually means watching from the back.
  • Wear something the First Order will notice
    Resistance and rebel gear draws the performers over more often than plain clothes do. Wear it only if you want to be spoken to.
  • Bring a hat for a midday set
    There's nowhere to duck out of the sun once the crowd forms. Sunglasses help as much as the hat, since the glare comes off the paving.
  • Everyone in the party can watch this one
    Disney lists the experience as suitable for all ages, with no height requirement to meet. Infants and toddlers can stay in the stroller at the back of the crowd.
