Maharajah Jungle Trek is a self-guided walking trail in the Asia section of Disney's Animal Kingdom, open since March 1999. The legend is that the Anandapur Royal Forest was once a hunting ground for wealthy maharajahs and is now a jungle that has taken the place back, so you cross towering footbridges and stand in the shadow of a palace frozen in time on your way between habitats. Sumatran tigers are the reason most people walk it. The rest of the roster is deeper than the tigers suggest: Komodo dragons, gibbons, Eld's deer, blackbuck, water buffalo, Malayan flying foxes, and an aviary you walk into where over 50 species of birds fly loose.

Nothing here is scheduled. There is no height requirement, no Lightning Lane, and no return window to make, so you can walk in whenever you get there and leave when you are done. The people who come off it disappointed are usually the ones who arrived in the afternoon heat, when the tigers are asleep and the foliage holds the humidity in place.

The good

  • You set your own pace
    Nobody moves you along. Stand at the tiger habitat until something happens, or walk the loop without stopping once.
  • The tigers are the headline
    Disney sells the trek on tigers and the trek delivers them. The Sumatran tiger habitat is the one spot where people stop moving entirely.
  • There is more here than tigers
    Komodo dragons, gibbons, Eld's deer, blackbuck, water buffalo, and Malayan flying foxes all live along the path. Most guests walk in expecting one animal and meet six.
  • You walk into the aviary, not past it
    Over 50 species of birds fly loose in it, so the last stretch of the trail puts you inside the habitat rather than outside the glass.
  • The ruins do real work
    Towering footbridges, cascading waterfalls, and a palace frozen in time carry the Anandapur story without a single ride vehicle.
  • Shade covers most of the walk
    Trees cover the path for long stretches, which is more than the open concrete between Animal Kingdom's headliners offers.
  • Any height, and usually no wait
    Disney lists the height requirement as Any Height, and the trail takes as many people as show up. Nobody in your party gets left at the entrance.

The bad

  • The animals hide when it is hot
    Tigers spend much of a warm afternoon asleep somewhere out of sight, and the other habitats go quiet with them. A midday walk can turn into a look at empty grass.
  • The bat enclosure is a lot
    Malayan flying foxes are large, they hang close to the path, and the enclosure smells like it. Some guests walk it once and never again.
  • Shade does not mean cool
    The same dense planting that keeps the sun off also keeps the breeze out. On a July afternoon the trail feels swampy.
  • It is more walking in a park full of walking
    Animal Kingdom already asks for miles on foot. Adding a loop that exists only to be walked is a hard sell late in the day.

Veteran tips

  • Walk it in the morning
    Animals are active in the early hours and asleep by the middle of the afternoon. The same trail is a different attraction at 10am and 3pm.
  • Ask the Cast Members what you are looking at
    They stand at the viewing areas and will name the birds, point out what is hiding in the canopy, and tell you about individual animals. Ask for a bird identification card while you are there.
  • Nothing here needs booking
    The trek is not on Lightning Lane and has no return window, so it is the one thing in Asia you can do without spending a selection or a plan on it.
  • Fill a Kali River Rapids return window with it
    Kali River Rapids is on Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and the trek is what people do while they wait out the window rather than standing in Asia doing nothing.
  • Stay in your wheelchair or ECV
    Disney lists the trek as May Remain in Wheelchair/ECV, so there is no transfer anywhere on the trail. Audio Description is available.
  • Check ahead if you travel with a service animal
    Disney's advisory says service animals are not permitted in some areas of this attraction. Ask a Cast Member at the entrance before you start walking.
  • Warn bat-averse kids before the enclosure
    The flying foxes come as a surprise partway along the trail, and a child who has been told what is coming handles it better than one who has not.
  • Carry water in with you
    There is nowhere to buy a drink along the trail, and the humidity under the canopy does its work whether or not you noticed the heat outside.
