Dumbo the Flying Elephant at Disney World's Magic Kingdom

Composite Review (4.5 / 5)

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is an iconic Fantasyland staple at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World. Reviews and general visitor consensus paint a clear picture of an attraction that is essential for young families but often deemed a classic-but-skippable spinner ride for older guests.

Overall Verdict

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a quintessential Disney World “rite of passage” for young children and a beloved, nostalgic classic for adults.

Its location in Storybook Circus, coupled with an ingenious interactive waiting area, has solved the perennial problem of long, hot queues. While the ride itself is very short and simple—essentially a glorified carnival spinner—it remains a must-do for first-time visitors and families with toddlers. For all others, it’s a pleasant, albeit minor, experience best enjoyed when the line is short or after sunset.

The Experience

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a gentle, aerial carousel ride based on the star of the 1941 animated film.

Riders board one of the vibrant, colorful elephant vehicles attached to an articulated arm. As the two twin carousels spin in opposite directions, guests use a single joystick/lever inside their Dumbo to control the vertical height, flying up to 17–20 feet in the air. The ride lasts approximately 90 seconds to two minutes.

In its current location in Storybook Circus, the ride features a dazzling, illuminated water fountain at its base, which is especially beautiful at night. The music is classic circus organ fanfare, completing the Big Top atmosphere.

The Queue: The waiting experience has been completely transformed. Instead of standing in a switchback line, guests receive a restaurant-style pager and are ushered into a massive, air-conditioned, interactive circus-themed playground. Here, children can climb, slide, and burn off energy until the pager vibrates, signaling that it is their turn to board Dumbo. This innovative waiting system is often cited by parents as the best part of the attraction.

Top Tips from Reviewers

Summary

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a charming, nostalgic classic that perfectly captures the spirit of Fantasyland. It earns top marks for its genius interactive queue and for being the ideal, gentle first attraction for toddlers. However, its simple nature and extremely short duration mean it is not worth a long wait for older guests. Families with small children should make it a priority, using the air-conditioned playground as a break, while all others are advised to wait for a walk-on opportunity or enjoy the beautiful views during a late-night flight.
